New Delhi: Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) demands the renaming of its central library after BR Ambedkar. The student wing also demanded a statue of Babasaheb, the architect of Indian Constituition on JNU campus.
Satirizing the demand the left-backed students’ organisations said the ABVP and the BJP government had been attacking students pursuing “Ambedkarite politics”.
JNUSU Vice President Shehla Rashid Shora, also a member of the Left-affiliated All India Students Association (AISA) said, “it’s a weird irony that, on the one hand, your (ABVP) government is terrorising students who pursue Ambedkarite politics, while you are hell bent upon appropriating Ambedkar. If you embrace Ambedkar, you have to also embrace Rohith Vemula.”
April 14 is the 125th birth anniversary of BR Ambedkar.
Saurabh Sharma, JNU students’ union joint secretary and the only ABVP member in the student union said,” The JNU central library should be renamed as Ambedkar library and the premises should have a statue of the dalit rights activists.”
