Chennai: A cyclone alert has been sounded in the state of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh by the weather department, after heavy rains continued to wreak havoc in Tamil Nadu.

The weather department put the alert for north Tamil Nadu and south coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Weather department officials said that the depression over the Bay of Bengal could turn into a cyclone. The fishermen have been warned against going to the sea.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), a depression over southwest Bay of Bengal has moved to 90 km east of Chennai and 70 km of the coast. The wind speed is expected to be around 75 km per hour.

Very heavy rainfall is expected in Chennai and parts of Tamil Nadu and also in Puducherry.
