Chennai: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) chief Jayalalithaa who beat all odds and crushed the exit poll credibility in the recently concluded Assembly Elections 2016, fulfilled her poll promise and said 100 units of electricity will be provided to the people of Tamil Nadu.
Apart from the free power, other freebies promised by the AIADMK chief include 50% subsidy for women to buy scooters, free laptops with Internet for students in Class 11 and Class 12, eight grams of gold for women getting married, free cell phones for all ration-card holders, Rs 18,000 as maternity assistance, maternity leave for nine months and Rs 40,000 crore in loans for farmers from 2016-2021.
Beating all odds and proving all exit polls wrong, Jayalalithaa rewrote history in the Assembly Elections 2016 by breaking a three-decade long cycle of anti-incumbency and retaining power despite efforts of bitter rivals DMK.
Jayalalithaa, or Amma, as she is fondly referred to, won 134 seats in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The three-time Chief Minister will be the first person after Marudhur Gopalan Ramachandran to be elected to two continuous terms.
