NEW DELHI: Nobel laureate and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) Chief RK Pachauri has been named in an FIR filed in the national capital on Wednesday by a 29-year-old woman colleague accusing him of sexual harassment.
After the FIR, 74-year-old Pachauri was relieved with the interim relief against his arrest on Thursday from the Delhi High Court allowing him to move towards a lower court seeking anticipatory bail by February 23.
After the TERI Director-General was summoned by the Delhi Police for questioning, he approached the court for interim protection till March 23.
Justice SP Garg heard the plea of RK Pachauri and claimed that he had ‘come to know’ about the FIR from news reports and received a notice from the police to produce his laptops, telephone and other documents.
The complainant in her FIR claimed that her boss had sexually harassed her for almost two years since she joined his company in September 2013. She also claimed that the D-G had indulged into ‘sexual laden conversations’ with her over emails and SMS.
The FIR includes charges under Section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354 A (sexual harassment), 354 D (stalking) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Sources inform that soon after filing the FIR, the complainant submitted a written request to the Delhi Police asking them to take away the mobile phones, laptop and other computers from Pachauri. They added that the woman claims that the accused again tried contacting her on Tuesday morning four times through calls and messages.
Ahead of the court hearing, in a statement issued on Wednesday, Pachauri’s spokesperson said: “Given the fact that the said matter is currently sub-judice and the Hon’ble High Court is seized of the matter, it will not be prudent or appropriate to comment anything on the matter pending adjudication before the Hon’ble Delhi High Court.”For all the latest National News, download NewsX App
