New Delhi: Celebrating the Bombay High Court’s verdict on Udta Punjab where the HC censured the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) for its ham-fisted decision towards the film, the team behind Udta Punjab held a press conference on Tuesday where they expressed their own views about the controversy the film had been embroiled in.
Speaking to reporters, director Anurag Kashyap said that the fight would continue and that removing Nihalani was not the solution, but changing the system was.
The director who has been at loggerheads with CBFC chief Pahlaj Nihalani over the 89 cuts recommended for the film said that despite the strictness of the guidelines followed by the CBFC, films like Gangs of Wasseypur, Black Friday, Dev D, had been passed under the same scanner.
Asked about whether the film influences or affects the outcome of election in Punjab, Kashyap said that the film was far from politics but was very close to the truth.
“If I don’t want to watch something, I don’t,” said the director who emphasised the fact that ‘judging’ was fine.
Actor Shahid Kapoor and actress Alia Bhatt were all praises for the judiciary for passing the film. The former said that he was fortunate, and that the country should let the cinema evolve and freedom of expression should be allowed.
Shahid Kapoor also praised Alia Bhatt for giving performance as a rag-tag character which could’ve ruined her reputation.
Albeit the film Udta Punjab has been passed by the Mumbai High Court, a petition has been filed in Haryana and Punjab High Court pertaining to particular elements inside the movie.
