Chennai: The Kolkata police put an end to an ongoing fake passport racket in the city by busting 5 people, including three from Sri Lanka, seizing fake passports and stamps from the scene.
Acting on a tip, a special police force arrested three people, who were accused of allegedly helping Lankans and others in procuring fake passports as well as visas through fraudulent means.
The accused later were identified as P Krishnamurthy V Rajan and S Muralitharan. The police said, “Krishnamurthy and Rajan had emigrated to Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka several years ago and they had also served jail terms in connection with fake passport cases in the past.
Police zeroed in on the trio after recently arresting two people, one of them a Sri Lankan identified as Gunanayagam, who were in possession of nine fake passports.
As per the reports, the accused used to charge Rs 30,000 per passport and Rs 2-4 lakh for a visa.
The police official said that over 40 fake visa stamps, 28 fake passports, electronic equipments used for preparing the travel documents, lamination machines and mobile phones were recovered.
The three arrested were remanded to judicial custody by a court on Wednesday.
