CHENNAI: The legislators of J Jayalalithaa’s AIADMK are expected to meet in next few days to formally choose her as the legislature party leader.

According to the sources, the swearing-in event will soon be organized and Jayalalithaa is expected to take oath as the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister once again along with a new cabinet.

Believing a senior minister from the party, all the ministers and MLAs were asked to stay back in Chennai for some days. The MLAs of rebel DMK who extended their support to Amma have also been asked to attend the MLAs meeting. Even though there is no official order from Jayalalithaa on it yet, it is expected to convene in few days.

Sources further informed that Amma has not met any party seniors including Chief Minister O Panneerselvam but has spoken with them over the intercom.

“We do not have an idea on what is there is her mind. While we thought that she would give a public appearance shortly after the judgment, she however, preferred not to see anyone from the party. Only few people could actually meet her,” added the minister.

Because Jayalalithaa was barred due to conviction by the special court, Amma will now have to be elected as an MLA within six months after being sworn-in as the Chief Minister. However, there are strong speculations that the AIADMK Chief would rather have the state elections advanced by a few months so as to make the most of the voter mood and cadre confidence, and omit the need of having to fight the assembly elections two times within a year.

“We cannot rule out early Assembly Polls but ahead of that, Amma would have to launch all projects and schemes such as Chennai Metro Rail, extended Amma canteens, new buses etc,” expressed an AIADMK MP.

At the same time, it is yet not clear if the Election Commission is ready to conduct the elections. The Chief Electoral Office in Tamil Nadu is taking measures to connect the Aadhar number with the electoral roll.

According to Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami, this is yet not completed and will take some more time, and once the electoral roll is set, the EC will consider the exams and the northeast monsoon. Therefore, it is expected to take three to four months from the assembly is suspended.
