New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party MLA Naresh Yadav, who was booked for Malerkotla Quran sacrilege earlier this month, was sent to two-day judicial custody by the Malerkota court on Monday. The AAP MLA was arrested by the Punjab police in New Delhi on Sunday evening.

The AAP legislator was addressing media in Delhi when the Punjab Police team arrived to arrest him. The arrest came just hours after the Malerkotla court issued his arrest warrants.

The Punjab Police had questioned Yadav for over eight hours on July 9 in connection with the Quran desecration incident of June 24.

“We arrested him from his office today (Sunday) evening after obtaining arrest warrants from the Malerkotla court. We have enough evidence in this case against the MLA,” said a Punjab Police official heading the 25-member police team to arrest the legislator.

Yadav was booked when the alleged mastermind of the case, Vijay Kumar said that the desecration was done on the behest of Naresh Yadav and that he was offered Rs 1 crore for carrying out the act.

Vijay Kumar also said that he had a meeting with Yadav in Delhi where the AAP MLA asked him to tear the pages of Quran and throw them near a drain on Khanna road in Malerkotla, Punjab.

Naresh Yadav has been booked under 109 and 153-A sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
