Bhopal: Girls of Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology on Thursday carried out protests against ‘gender discriminatory’ hostel rules, dress code and hostel timings, in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.

One of the protesting students said, “We are not allowed inside hostel post 9:30PM. We have college from 9AM-5PM and as several students attend coaching classes outside the college, which run up to 10 pm, it is not possible for them to reach hostel by 9.30PM. Coaching class ends late, we get so tired. We are forced to sleep in lobby area if we don’t make it by 9:30PM. But the rule is not same for boys.”

Protesting against the dress code, they said, Dress code should be that which is comfortable for us, why should we listen to others? Why shouldn’t we wear shorts? This is the 21st Century. (Dress code wo ho jisme hum comfortable hon, hum dusron ki kyun sune? Kyun na pehne shorts? 21st century hai).

However responding to girils who were protesting against dress code and timing issue, Youngest female sarpanch on MANIT  Bhakti Sharma said, “There should be a dress code in colleges as we are there to study, not to ‘show-off.’
“Wrong to say that since you are from 21st century you must be allowed to wear whatever you want. The college management should also talk to the students and decide on the dress code rather than imposing their decision.”
“Don’t feel its right to hold protest for such small issues. It’s only matter of miscommunication (b/w students and management),” Bhakti added.
