New Delhi: Taking place in Bengaluru on Sunday, a 28-year-old man was caught by four rock climbers for an alleged theft and handed over to the police. The matter escalated when the arrested thief died the next day.

Soon after the death of the theft-accused man, police registered a case of murder against the rock climbers. The rock climbers, however, denied all the charges and said that the man had died a custodial death.

The accused thief in the case, Raju, was caught red-handed by the athletes trying to steal a bag containing laptop while they were training at Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Sunday morning. After catching the thief, the climbers handed him over to the police around 6 30am.

Two videos that have surfaced on the net casts light on different interpretations of the incident. In one video, Raju is seen in good condition when he’s handed over to the police, except a limp. In the second one, Raju is seen being roughed up by the athletes.

When at the police station, Raju complained about internal pain and was quickly taken to the hospital where died in the evening.

“In the station, Raju developed pain. He died of internal head injuries later. We have taken action against the four (athletes) and one more is yet to be held,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Sandeep Patil.

It is clear that Raju died of internal injuries to his head, but what is not clear is that which party was involved in grievously harming Raju. Police have arrested the four rock climbers and have sent them to 14-day judicial custody.
