New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the Karnataka government to release 6,000 cusecs of water within a time period of 48 hours that is by today and tomorrow.

This order came after the Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah on Monday told the Supreme Court that the state cannot release any water to Tamil Nadu till December.

The internal strife over Cauvery river water has resulted in massive protests both in the state of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The Supreme Court had earlier told Karnataka that it must release 6,000 cusecs of water for a week to assist farmers in Tamil Nadu. However, Karnataka had not adhered to this order.

CM Siddaramaiah told the Supreme Court that Karnataka itself is facing shortage of drinking water. Farmers in Tamil Nadu are desperately seeking water because of shortage of monsoon rains this season.
