Lucknow: With polls in Uttar Pradesh around the corner, the politics of jumping ships had begun a while back but is now gaining some serious momentum. In a fresh development, Rita Bahugana Joshi, Congress MLA from the Lucknow Cantonment Constituency, is all set to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, she contested against BJP veteran leader Lal Ji Tandon and lost by 40,901 votes. Experts, however, thought it was a good performance keeping in mind she was just given three months to prepare for the elections.

In 2012, however, Joshi turned the tide, defeating three times undefeated BJP veteran Suresh Chandra Tiwari by 21753 votes in the Assembly Elections.

Rita Bahuguna Joshi has a strong hold in Lucknow and neighbouring areas which might prove a profitable deal for the BJP.

Rita Bahuguna held the post of mayor of Allahabad from 1995-2000.

Rita Bahuguna Joshi’s father Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna was appointed as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. However, his tenure was short and he was forced to resign by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975.
