New Delhi: After a report by Justice Ashok Roopanwal Committee claimed that Hyderabad University’s Rohith Vemula had committed suicide out of frustration, a new video surfaced online which showed Vemula declaring himself as Dalit.

“My name is Rohith Vemula. I came from Guntur. My social background…I am a Dalit from Guntur district,” Rohith Vemula is seen saying in the short video clip released on YouTube. The video was purportedly recorded inside the Hyderabad University campus where he was staying in a makeshift tent upon his suspension.

The committee on his suicide had exclaimed that Rohith Vemula’s mother had faked her son’s Dalit status.

Vemula also describes in the video about his upbringing and talks about his altercation with ABVP students. “In 2012, ABVP filed a case against me in Chandanagar police station where I was detained for two days,” says Rohith Vemula.

The death of Rohith Vemula sparked a national outrage across all prominent campus in India. Jawaharlal Nehru University sprung into national spotlight as the government levied charges of sedition against student leader Kanhaiya Kumar who was protesting Vemula’s ‘institutional’ death.
