New Delhi: Following the demonetisation of high denomination currency notes, farmers in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, are worry about cropping season due to inadequate supply of new currency in rural areas.
“We are facing a lot of problem. We don’t have change and are unable to purchase seeds. What are we supposed to do?” said a distraught farmer.
Due to non-availability of change, seed and fertiliser traders are also facing problems.

“Farmers are unable to purchase seeds due to non-availability of change. This is affecting cropping. Since it is a rural area, number of banks are less. Sometimes, they remain shut due to the shortage of cash. ATMs are not working at some places,” said a shopkeeper who sells seeds.
In the wake of difficulties being faced by farmers, state Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav had demanded relief for them from the central government. He said that the farmers are not able to utilise the earnings of the Kharif harvest and put these to their use.
