Assam: At least 3 soldiers have been martyred and 4 others injured in an ongoing encounter with suspected United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) terrorists in Pengri, Tinsukia on Saturday. 
“The incident took place at around 5.30 a.m., in the Pengeri area,” said the Defence public relations officer Lt. Col. Suneet Newton.
Speaking on the incident, DGP Assam Mukesh Sahay said, “the operation is still continue and one soldier has been martyred.”
“They (the militants) had planted an improvised explosive device (IED) on the road. When the IED exploded, the convoy stopped. Then the militants fired indiscriminately,” Newton said, adding that although the forces retaliated, four soldiers were injured of which one succumbed in the hospital.
A couple of months ago, tension gripped Tinsukia district in Assam after five to six militants belonging to the anti-talk faction of ULFA shot dead two people and injured seven.

The attack took place at a house in Bamungaon village. The dead were identified as Kishori Shah (65) and his son Rajesh Shah (35), the police said.

Hundreds of people in Philobari area came out to the streets to condemn the attack on “Hindi speaking” community and blamed police for their failure to protect the lives of innocent civilians.
