New Delhi: Farmers from across Gujarat on Saturday staged protests in Surat against the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) restriction on money exchange in cooperative banks.

RBI had withdrawn the facility given to the cooperative banks to accept or exchange the demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.

The protesters in the mass rally jammed roads with tractors and trucks loaded with agricultural produce.

On Friday, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan led a daylong protest outside the RBI office to denounce the Narendra Modi government’s decision to what they said was “sideline the cooperative banks” following the demonetisation on November 8. He said the move was an “injustice” that would wreck the very existence of cooperative banks in Kerala.
