Over 63 % polling observed in the first phase of Uttar Pradesh assembly elections in the western part of the state, says Election Commission. The turnout is much higher than the earlier state elections, said officials.

Uttar Pradesh kick started the polling season with as 73 constituencies and 2.6 crore people eligible to use their voting franchise.

The major political parties in the fray are the ruling Samajwadi Party (SP), Congress, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

There appears no clear front-runner among the three major contestants – BJP, SP-Congress and BSP – in the 73 seats that going to polls in the first phase of elections in Uttar Pradesh.

In the 2012 assembly polls, of the 73 seats — SP had won 24 seats, Bahujan Samaj Party 23, Bharatiya Janata Party 12, Rashtriya Lok Dal 9 and Congress 5 seats.

The actual figures will be calculated by 07:00 PM evening, Saturday.
