Cash worth 19.56 crore, 4.44 lakh litres liquor, drugs and gold were seized in the first phase of Uttar Pradesh elections on Saturday, says Election Commission of  India (ECI).

The EC-appointed teams also seized drug worth 96.93 lakh, gold & silver of 14 crores in multiple raids conducted across the poll-bound Western region of UP.


Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, after polling ended for the phase 1 in Uttar Pradesh, EC said, “At least 13 cases of paid news were also identified, 10 of the cases have been confirmed.”


A total of 2, 96,906 troublemakers were identified & preventive actions were taken against them, added EC.

Discussing their poll preparation, EC said that 3888 digital & video cameras were installed and webcasting was done in 2857 places to maintain peaceful and glitch free polling in the state.


Uttar Pradesh witnessed 63% turnout in the first phase of election, covering 73 constituencies in the western part of the state.

“Polling was peaceful across the 15 districts and 63% (tentative) of the voters cast their votes,” said Deputy Election Commissioner Vijay Dev.

The turnout is much higher than in earlier state elections, said the officials.

Total vote percentage in the 2007 state assembly polls was 45.96% and 59.40% in 2012.
