The District Level Scrutiny Committee (DLSC) in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh has declared Rohith Vemula, the research scholar at the University of Hyderabad, who committed suicide in January 2016, as belonging to Other Backward Class (OBC) category and not a Dalit.
The committee that was reviewing the Dalit status of Rohith Vemula, submitted its final report to the government stating that neither Rohith nor his mother Radhika are Dalits.
On January 17, 2016, Vemula committed suicide on the campus of Hyderabad Central University, which triggered nationwide uproar with many political party leaders joining the protests.
The report submitted by the DLS committee also stated that the family obtained the Scheduled Caste certificate through fraudulent means and should be now cancelled.
The Andhra Pradesh government on Monday served a notice to Rohith’s mother, Radhika, asking her to prove her claims of being a Dalit with valid documents within two weeks.
