A Congress leader from Bhiwandi in Maharashtra was shot to death by some unknown assailants outside his residence on Tuesday night.

Manoj Mhatre, leader of Congress party in the Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation, was attacked with sharp weapons by the assailants and then fired from point blank range. The murder was caught on the security cameras that were placed in the parking lot of his residence.

Mhatre was rushed to Jupiter hospital in Thane where doctors declared him brought dead.

“We are investigating the incident and a case of murder will be registered at Narpoli police station,” said Parag Manere, DCP, Thane Crime Branch.

Although the reason behind the murder is yet to be ascertained, heavy police force have been deployed in the area to avoid any further incident.

Elections for the next term of the Bhiwandi Municipal Corporation, of which Mr Mhatra was a member, are scheduled for May.
