All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Tuesday said it will give Rs 10 lakh compensation to the next kin of a pregnant staff nurse who died earlier this month due to negligence by the doctors treating her.
“An amount of Rs 10 lakh compensation shall be paid to the next of kin of Nursing Officer, Rajbir Kaur, after due administrative approval. The compassionate appointment case of next of kin of Nursing Officer Late Rajbir Kaur may be processed expeditiously,” said a statement issued by the AIIMS.
Rajbir Kaur, a nurse with AIIMS, died on February 4 during delivery through caesarean section.
Kaur had suffered a cardiac arrest during the surgery, leading to death.
Following the incident, AIIMS nurses went on strike demanding suspension of the resident doctors involved in the treatment.
Admitting that the case of Kaur was low risk pregnancy and monitored in the labor room on January 16, 2017, the institution said: “The labor was progressing well till 5 a.m. when there was a sudden drop in the heart rate necessitating emergency surgery. The baby was limp at birth. Resuscitation efforts were made but were not successful.”
“Nursing Officer Rajbir Kaur was shifted to AB 8 ICU where she passed away on February 4, 2017,” the statement said quoting the Deputy Director V. Srinivas.
Initiating necessary action against the officials, the AIIMS administration said that a termination order to the Senior Resident, Anesthesiology, who was found guilty of wilful absence of his duties will be issued.
“A Displeasure Memorandum of Director AIIMS shall be issued to Senior Resident Gynaecology. A warning shall be issued to the Junior Resident Anaesthesiology for having left the Operation Theatre under pressure of Residents of Obstetrics and Gynaecology,” said the statement.
According to the hospital, a show cause notice shall also be issued to the consultant on call of Obstetrics and Gynaecology for not being present for the emergency operation despite being informed.
“Head of Anaesthesiology will ensure round the clock availability of Senior Residents at the maternity Operation Theatre,” said the statement.
It said the head of anaesthesia department shall ensure that the Consultant of Anaesthesiology will be available in Hospital premises to oversee.
“They will also need to be available to supervise anaesthesiology services in diverse areas including AB8 ICU/ Main OT/ Radiology/ Emergency Department and Maternity OT 24×7 given the type of emergencies that AIIMS is handling,” said the statement.
A Committee under the Chairman Hospital Management Board shall be constituted to augment the health care services with regard to EHS employees.
