Naga People’s Front (NPF) leader, Shurhozelie Liezietsu, on Wednesday, took oath as the new Chief Minister of Nagaland, replacing incumbent TR Zeliang.
Shurhozelie Liezietsu was elected as the new legislature party leader of the ruling Democratic Alliance after Chief Minister TR Zeliang resigned on Sunday night.
“Shurhozelie has been unanimously elected the new legislature party leader of the NPF and also of the government,” said Nagaland’s Rajya Sabha member KG Kenye.
Zeliang was facing heavy protests from the tribal groups who opposed his move of giving 33% reservation for women in the civic polls.
Shurhozelie in a press released applauded Zeliang’s resignation as the “supreme sacrifice”. “He has done this with a big heart and I want all to recognise this sacrifice,” said Shurhozelie
In the 60-member assembly, the ruling Democratic Alliance of Nagaland coalition government comprises 48 NPF legislators, including suspended legislator Imkong Imchen, four Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and eight Independents.
