As per reports, the accident took place in Jdohkroh village, 11 km from Nongstoin on the road to Shillong. The driver of the truck lost control of the vehicle and hit the concrete railing on the hilly road that led the truck to overturn throwing most of the passengers in a deep gorge.

Sylvester Nongtnger, police superintendent of West Khasi Hills said all the victims were heading towards Presbyterian Church.

“Twelve people died on the spot and four succumbed to their injuries in hospital,” Mr Nongtnger told IANS. Most of the injured have been shifted to nearby hospitals and rescue operations are on.
