UTTAR PRADESH: In the seventh attack associated with the case so far, a key eyewitness in the rape case against controversial guru Asaram Bapu was shot at in Shahjahapur area of Uttar Pradesh on Friday.

Kripal Singh, 35 was attacked when two men reportedly came on a bike from behind and the person riding opened fire at him while he was on his way back home on a motorcycle.

Singh who received bullet injuries in the back also reportedly warned against deposing against the self-styled godman. The duo after attacking the witness fled from the scene.

“He was shot from the back when he was coming back from the market. He is one of the witnesses in the Asaram case and he was being warned that if he deposed against him, they would not spare him,” father of a minor who has accused the 74-year-old guru of sexually assaulting her at his ashram near Jodhpur in Rajasthan in 2013 was quoted in a media report.

According to the father, Singh’s statement against Asaram was recorded three months ago and he told him that he had been receiving threats for some time for speaking up against the spiritual guru.

After a key witness against him was attacked in May, Asaram Bapu while being taken to Jodhour court had sarcastically remarked, “Duniyaan mein sabhi hamle main hi karwata hoon (I am responsible for all the attacks in this world).”

74-year-old Asaram has been in jail in Jodhpur since September 2013 over allegations of raping a teenage girl at his ashram. After two years, Asaram, along with his son Narayan Sai was booked in an alleged rape case of two sisters at their ashram in Surat, Gujarat.

Ever since the duo has been in jail, nine witnesses have been attacked, while two are dead.
