Just a few minutes before the nation was to embrace the biggest tax reform in its history — Goods and Service Tax (GST), Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the special midnight session held for the GST launch and thanked all the political parties for the combined efforts they had put in bringing the historic moment to life.
While addressing the Parliamentarians in the special midnight session of pre-GST launch, PM Modi said that it is the moment where the future course of this country will be decided. Hailing GST a reform in tax sector, Prime Minister said, “In the building of the nation there are some moments when we reach a new turn and try to reach newer heights.”
PM Modi also thanked all the Parliamentarians for their crucial presence.
Here are a few of the highlights from the Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s speech which was followed by the address of President Pranab Mukherjee and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley:
a) The direction that we have picked, the system we have developed is not an achievement of one party or one government, it is our shared inheritance.
b) Remembering Chanakya in his speech PM Modi said, “Chanakya had said however difficult the goal maybe, we can achieve it through tireless work.”
c) Today, GST Council had its 18th meeting and in a while GST will be enacted. It is a coincidence that the Holy book Gita also has 18 chapters.
d) While addressing the Parliamentarians PM Modi also recalled Sardar Patel saying, “If Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel hadn’t united all kingdoms of India just try and think what India would have seemed like today. Just like that, GST is uniting all markets of India today.”
e) In the speech made, PM Modi recalled the historic moment 14th August 1947. He said, “Today at 12 midnight, we have united in the Central Hall, this is a place where uncountable icons of our country have set foot. This place has been witness to the night of 14th August 1947 when the country embraced Independence.”
f) In the pre-GST launch speech, PM Modi said that GST is an exemplary example of cooperative federalism.
g) There were 500 different kinds of tax all over the country. Today, we are free from that and we have one nation, one tax: PM Modi.
