As Sasikala bribegate takes centre stage in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Sunday demanded a thorough probe on the reports of AIADMK General Secretary and convict VK Sasikala Natarajan getting VIP treatment at the Bengaluru Central Prison in exchange for a bribe of Rs 2 crore.

Speaking to the media, DMK spokesperson Saravanan said that the charges pressed by DIG Prisons, D Roopa are shocking.

“Like Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said, a probe is necessary into the matter, after which necessary action needs to be taken,” he said.

Taking a jibe at AIADMK, Saravanan said that it was not the first time that such incidents had come to light; the party has time and again believed that money could bail them out of every crisis.

“This is not the first time such an incident is happening. The AIADMK’s attitude is such that money can be used to bail them out of any crisis, this attitude is of extreme concern,” he said.

Adding further, DMK said that it is not at all surprising to see Sasikala’s name in the controversy as AIADMK General Secretary had previously faked illness to avoid prison term awarded by the Supreme Court in the disproportionate assets case.

Taking cognizance of the reports Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has promised to probe into the charges asserting that the guilty won’t be spared.

“We have taken serious cognizance of the allegation of irregularities in Bengaluru Central Prison and ordered a high level inquiry,” said Siddaramaiah.

The case came to light when DIG of Prisons D Roopa in a letter submitted to the state government accused the Director General of Police and Inspector General of Prisons Sathyanarayan Rao and other city jail officials for taking the money and providing Sasikala with a private kitchen and other facilities.

“Sasikala has given Rs 1 crore bribe to Rao and another Rs 1 crore was distributed among officials, including warden of the central jail where she is serving a 4-year sentence in an illegal wealth case for allowing her special privileges,” alleged Roopa Moudgil.

Sasikala was ordered to serve a four-year jail term in a 21-year-old disproportionate assets case by the Supreme Court. The 59-year-old AIADMK leader has been lodged in Parappana Agrahara central prison in Bengaluru since February 15.
