Senior Congress leader and in charge of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, Ambika Soni tendered her resignation from the post of Congress general secretary on Friday citing health concerns.

Speaking to the media, Soni said, “I have requested leadership to relieve me as in-charge of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh due to health reasons.”

Sushil Kumar Shinde will take over the charge of Himachal Pradesh even as Ambika Sonia continues to stay the Member of Parliament (MP) for Congress.

The blow comes on the same day as another senior Congress leader Shankersinh Vaghela is slated to resign from the Gujarat Congress party.

In a show of strength to Congress, the leader of opposition in Gujarat, during the celebration of his 77th birthday event said that he was ousted from the party 24 hours ago.

“Congress party had showed me the doors 24 hours ago,” he said.

Meanwhile, refuting all the charges, Congress said that they did not remove Vaghela and the leader is still with Congress.

Ambika is a Member of Parliament representing the state of Punjab in the Rajya Sabha. She has also served as Minister of Information and Broadcasting in the Manmohan Singh Government.
