Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday inaugurated Dr APJ Abdul Kalam memorial in Rameshwaram on the second death anniversary of the former President who passed away on July 27, 2015.
The ceremony kick started with PM Modi hoisting the national flag at the memorial and later flag off an exhibition bus ‘Kalam Sandesh Vahini’ that is slated to travel across states and reach Rashtrapati Bhavan on October 15, marking the birth anniversary of APJ Abdul Kalam.
The memorial is built by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in Pei Karumbu.
Kalam died of cardiac arrest in Shillong in 2015 and was laid to rest at Pei Karumbu in Rameswaram.

“Rameswaram has a vital place in our history and it is also known as a place so closely associated with Dr. Kalam,” he added.
Speaking further he said that Rameswaram has given India one of its most famous sons in Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.

01: 07 PM IST | Raking the issue of fishermen being apprehended by Sri Lankan Navy, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E Palaniswami requested PM Narendra Modi to take immediate action for the release of 75 Indian fishermen release and 149 boats from Sri Lanka.
Notably, there has been a sudden rise in the number of Indian fishermen being arrested in the Palk Strait region.
Earlier, after the growing concern over the Indian fishermen being detained, Tamil Nadu government on Friday flagged concerns after Sri Lanka amending its Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Act put a ban on bottom trawling in the Palk Bay.
As per the new rule, a fine of 50,000 Lankan rupees (LKR ) will be imposed along with imprisonment of up to two years on those found guilty of bottom trawling — a dangerous method where the fishermen drag large nets with heavy weights across the seafloor to catch fishes in bulk.
Apparently, the destructively dragging method scoops everything in its path, damaging the sea life form including the corals.
