A special CBI Court is set to begin hearing in a rape case Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh on Wednesday. Security has been tightened across Punjab in view of the hearing to prevent any untoward incident in the state.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim has been accused of raping sadhvis (women disciples) inside the sect headquarters in 2002. A sadhvi had written an anonymous letter addressing media, Chief Justice of Punjab-Haryana HC and PM alleging rape by Ram Rahim.

The incident had resulted in furore in both Hartana and Punjab following which High Court had directed CBI to investigate the matter. CBI had completed the probe in 2007 after which the matter was handed over to Panchkula’s special CBI court. The HC had also directed the court to’ complete the trial at the earliest’.

Meanwhile, a high alert has been issued in the state of Punjab in the wake of hearing. As per the reports, Punjab has asked for 250 paramilitary troops as verdict is likely to incite protests in the state.
