A massive gunfight between security forces and militants is reported to be underway in the Handwara area of frontier district of Kupwara in north Kashmir. At least two to three militants are believed to be trapped in the area.

Commenting on the matter, an official said that following the ‘special inputs’ about the presence of militants in the area, Special Operations Group (SOG) Handwara and Army’s 6 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) cordoned off Hingnikoot Ramhal area of Handwara.

The militants hiding in area suddenly opened fire on the search party which triggered the gunfight, the official added.

Previously on August 10, police said that a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant was arrested in Jammu and Kashmir’s Sopore town. As per official reports, 2 magazines and 3 cartridges were seized from Ishfaq Ahmad Kanna, who hails from Sopore.
