Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has sought a report from the Divisional Commissioner of police after incidents of violence reported from the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) campus. The police cane-charged at students including girls, who were protesting inside the campus against an alleged molestation of a female student. The proceedings took a violent turn on Saturday as more students gathered to seek action and were left injured in lathicharge by police in which several female students were also targeted.

The students were wounded when clashes took place inside the university campus over alleged sexual harassment of a female student. Students gathered near Vice Chancellor’s residence and hurled stones and petrol bombs at the police and other security forces who tried to prevent them from causing any damage.

In a bid to halt the tragedy and dispose of the protests, the university has now ordered the Dussehra holidays three days prior to the official date.

After criticism from several political parties including Samajwadi party and Congress, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath has asked for a report of the entire incident. “I have sought a report from the divisional commissioner, Varanasi, about the entire incident,” the CM said on Sunday.

Former CM and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav took to Twitter to condemn the attack and question the government over student’s safety inside the BHU campus. “Those who spoke of women’s safety and dignity are today attacking them. This proves that people no longer have the freedom of speech,” wrote Akhilesh Yadav.

Demanding strict action on the accused, “Not by force, solutions are formulated by debate. Lathicharge on BHU students is malleable. Actions should be taken against the accused, he mentioned in another tweet.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi slammed the BJP over the police lathicharge allegedly on women students.

Posting a link to a video of the female students who alleged that they were beaten up by male policemen at the campus, Gandhi tweeted: “BJP version of Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao in BHU.”

On Thursday, evening a student was allegedly molested by bike-borne miscreants near Bharat Kala Bhawan in the university premises. The victim screamed when the incident took place but the security personnel present at the spot did not take cognizance of the crime and ignored it.

The victim informed the hostel warden. When the Vice-Chancellor got information about the incident he visited ‘Triveni Hostel’ to investigate the matter. On Friday, a large number of students gathered at the main gate of the University and blocked the main gate.

Students alleged that BHU administration indulged in victim shaming after one student had reported an incident of molestation to them. As per reports, Varanasi police had to resort to cane-charge after a group of boys blocked the gate of the Vice-Chancellor’s lodge in support of girl hostellers protesting since Friday.

While speaking to the media, SSP Varanasi RK Bhardwaj had informed that there is a heavy deployment of police force at the campus and SP (city) Dinesh Singh is keeping a very close watch on the entire solution.

The ruckus on BHU campus began just hours after hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi left Varanasi after his two-day visit to his constituency.

The girl students had been protesting on the campus since Friday against the menace of eve-teasing on the campus.

Some of the women students alleged that the police even lathi-charged girl students who were protesting against eve-teasing inside the college campus.
