NEW DELHI: Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has been summoned as accused by a special court in a coal scam case on Wednesday.
The court has summoned Manmohan under section 409 of IPC which is criminal conspiracy and breach of trust by public servant or by banker. Manmohan has been asked to appear in the court on April 8.
The court has also named industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla, former Coal Secretary PC Parakh and three others as accused.
Earlier in January this year, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has recorded the statement of Manmohan Singh in connection to the coal block allocation case to industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla’s company Hindalco.
Sources informed NewsX that the court rejected CBI’s contention that Manmohan was a witness in the case and took cognisance of all the material on record before deciding to summon all 6 as accused.
While speaking to NewsX, PC Parakh said, “I have nothing to say. It’s a court order.”
“Judicial process will take its course. I’m upset but I’m sure that I will be able to clear my name. These are facts of life,” Manmohan Singh told reporters. For all the latest National News, download NewsX App
