Allahabad High Court is likely to pronounce its verdict on 2008 Arushi-Hemraj murder case on Thursday, nine years after it shook the entire country. Aarushi’s parents, Rajesh and Nupur Talwar were sentenced to life in prison in 2013 by a CBI court for murder and conspiracy. The Talwars had appealed against their conviction in the HC. The public opinion on the issue remains divided. As we wait with bated breath for the verdict, have a look at key points relating to the double murder case:

— 14-year-old Aarushi Talwar was found murdered in her bedroom in a flat in Noida on May 16, 2008. At first, family domestic help Hemraj was considered the main suspect, but his body was also found on the roof of the apartment the next day in a pool of blood. The door of the terrace was found locked from inside. Preliminary investigation in the case pointed out that both the murders were conducted with clinical precision and an inside job was suspected.

— In early investigation, Noida Police alleged Rajesh Talwar had murdered both Arushi and Hemraj in a fit of rage after seeing them in compromising position.

— Aarushi’s father Rajesh Talwar was arrested after the murder . He was put in jail and was released two months later on bail.

— The initial police investigation was severely criticised and the case was later handed over to CBI.

— In December 2010, the court was told by CBI that it had no evidence in the case but suspected Rajesh Talwar of committing the crime. The court observed that case could not be closed.

— The CBI also observed that no evidence suggested that Talwars’ home was being broken into, which made them conclude that it was an inside job.

— The judge which found them guilty also said that the Talwars had destroyed evidence.

— The CBI had asked for the death death sentence when Raesh and Nupur Talwar were convicted by a local court in Ghaziabad four years ago.

— The Talwars have denied committing the murder and blamed sensational media coverage for damaging their defence.

— The case went on to become the greatest murder mystery in India with public opinion divided on who killed Aarushi-Hemraj.
