The TMC’s public attack on Mahua continued unabated. Sushmita Dev, a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, was the most recent to express her displeasure, telling India Today that no leader can insult Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
“The entire Bengal knows what Mamata Banerjee feels for Maa Kaali, and no one can change that opinion,” she added.
Meanwhile, TMC senior leader Saugata Roy previously told sources that the party is considering taking action against Mahua Moitra. “What she said about the poster and Goddess Kaali is totally unacceptable,” he added.
Furthermore, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been actively protesting against Mamata Banerjee for failing to take action against her own party MP who made derogatory remarks about Goddess Kaali.
MP Mahua Moitra responded to a backlash over a movie poster depicting Goddess Kaali smoking a cigarette. “Kaali, to me, is a meat-eating, alcohol-accepting goddess,” she explained. You are free to create your own goddess. In some places, whiskey is offered to gods, while in others, it is considered blasphemy.”
Her remarks drew widespread criticism, including from within her own party. The TMC condemned the MP and stated that the party did not support her views.
The poster for the documentary film at the centre of the controversy recently went viral on social media, with many people claiming that it was an insult to the Hindu goddess and hurt religious sentiments.
The uproar began when filmmaker Leena Manimekalai shared the film’s poster on social media. The poster depicts a woman dressed in the Goddess Kaali costume. In the photograph, she is seen smoking a cigarette. In addition to her usual trishul (trident) and sickle, the actor portraying the goddess is shown holding the LGBTQ+ community’s pride flag.
