Days after resigning from Congress, Sunil Jakhar joins BJP

Sunil Jakhar, the former Punjab Congress chief, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday, five days after leaving the Congress.

JP Nadda, the BJP’s national president, inducted Jakhar at the party’s headquarters in New Delhi.

Nadda welcomed the former Congress politician, saying: “Sunil Jakhar is a great addition to the BJP. He is a seasoned politician who has built a name for himself in the political arena. I am convinced that he would help to develop the party in Punjab.”

He claimed Jakhar had a unique status in Punjab that was apart from the Congress party and aided nationalist forces.

“In Punjab, the BJP is fast becoming the most powerful nationalist party. As a result, all leaders with nationalist ideologies must join the BJP in order to strengthen the party and the Punjab “Nadda explained.

As he recalled his family’s five-decade involvement with the Congress, Jakhar, a three-term MLA and former Lok Sabha member from Gurdaspur, became upset.

“It’s not simple to end a three-generation relationship with Congress, which began in 1972 and continues now. We have been with the Congress through good and bad times “Jakhar stated.

He claimed that the BJP embraced him because he had not entered politics for personal gain.

Jakhar, who had previously been removed from all positions in Congress, announced his resignation on Facebook Live on Saturday.

He made the decision after launching a Twitter attack on former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, claiming that he was “not an asset” as the party leadership claimed.

He also attacked veteran Congresswoman Ambika Soni for her remarks on the “repercussions of having a Hindu chief minister in Punjab.” Soni’s statement was also cited by Jakhar as one of the causes for the Congress’ defeat in the Punjab assembly elections earlier this year.
