Amanatullah Khan, an Aam Admi Party (AAP) MLA, was detained by Delhi Police on Thursday while protesting against the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) in the Madanpur Khadar neighborhood, as part of the ongoing anti-encroachment effort in the national capital.
He was charged with hindering the discharge of a public servant’s duties.
According to Amanatullah, the Bharatiya Janata Party is using civic authority to bulldoze impoverished people’s homes.
Amanatullah in a tweet stated that “The police use of force against anyone who opposes BJP’s “bulldozer system” is unlawful. We oppose the BJP’s anti-people policies, and no matter how many times I have to go to jail for it, I will always speak up for the rights of the people.”
The SDMC used bulldozers in various locations of West Delhi on Thursday, including the Vishnu Garden neighborhoods of Khyala and Chand Nagar. It had previously carried out a demolition drive in the Madanpur Khadar neighborhood, where residents had protested the SDMC’s move.
Locals sang anti-encroachment slogans and sat on the roadways in an attempt to block bulldozers from carrying out the demolition in the presence of Delhi police.
Meanwhile, at Khan’s request, the residents in the neighborhood had already cleared the encroachments.
Khan further said that the MCD is on a campaign to “disturb the atmosphere.”
He stated that “The MCD came to disturb the atmosphere after I cleared all the encroachments. What else could explain their presence? Please notify me if there is any encroachment in my district, and I will remove it.”
