Rape convict Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh’s counsels on Monday told Punjab and Haryana High Court that he has ‘renounced the world’ and is in no state to pay Rs 30 lakh fine imposed by the trial court. It must be noted that this amount will be given to the rape survivors. Gurmeet’s counsel SK Garg Narvana has told a division bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Sudhir Mittal that all the properties of Dera Sacha Sauda have been ‘attached’ leaving Ram Rahim Singh in no position to pay the sum of Rs 30 lakh imposed as fine.
The division has however disposed off Ram Rahim Singh’s appeal and has asked the self-proclaimed godman to deposit the amount within two months. The court will keep this amount in a nationalised bank as FDR till the pendency of the appeal. “The high court has directed us to deposit fine with a bank in the shape of FDR through the court within two months. If our appeal is finalised in our favour, then we will get back money with interest,” Narvana told the media.
The jailed Dera chief has challenged CBI court’s verdict in the Punjab and Haryana Court on various grounds. A special CBI court in Panchkula had convicted Ram Rahim Singh for raping two of his women disciples and sentenced him to 20 years in jail. His conviction had sparked violence in Haryana and adjoining Punjab, leaving 41 dead and scores of others injured.
Gurmeet Ram Rahim is currently lodged in Rohtak’s Suneria jail. He has been assigned the task of farming in the jail and grows vegetable for fellow inmates. Meanwhile, Ram Rahim Singh’s adopted daughter Honeypreet Insan accused of inciting violence after her adoptive father’s conviction, has been taken to an undisclosed location by the police for grilling.
