Schools and colleges in Maharashtra’s Nashik city were closed on Tuesday due to heavy rains over the last few days, and residents in flood-prone areas were asked to relocate to safer areas, officials said.
The city received 97.4 mm of rain in the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday, but the rains later stopped, providing some relief to residents, they said.
Heavy rains were reported near the Saptashrungi temple in the district on Monday. Authorities reported six minor injuries among devotees during flooding on the temple steps.
Flooding hampered road communication in several villages, according to district administration officials.
The India Meteorological Department has issued a’red alert’ for the district of north Maharashtra from July 11 to 14, predicting heavy rain.
“Today’s decision to keep colleges and schools closed is purely precautionary.” “We are closely monitoring the rain situation,” said a district collectorate official.
