Navjot Singh Sidhu resigns from Punjab government: Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu on Sunday stepped down as minister from Punjab Cabinet. In a tweet, Sidhu shared a letter addressed to Congress president Rahul Gandhi, saying he has resigned as minister from the Punjab Cabinet. The letter has been dated June 10, 2019. Sidhu’s resignation has come amid an extended fight between him and Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh. Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister’s office has confirmed that they had not received Navjot Singh Sidhu’s resignation letter.
The reason behind his resignation has not been ascertained yet, however, it has been suspected that the Congress leader was not happy with his new portfolio. On June 6, during the shuffling of portfolios in the state cabinet, Singh allotted Sidhu power and new and renewable energy sources ministry, however, the latter was expecting the portfolio of local government, tourism and cultural affairs. It was just ahead of the 2017 Assembly polls when Sidhu had defected to the Congress.
The altercation between the two went public soon after Singh accused Sidhu of not handling the Local Government Department properly. He said that it was his poor performance that led to Congress’ poor performance in urban areas in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Sidhu, however, dismissed his allegations and claimed that he had been a performer throughout.
Following the unrest, Sidhu had met Congress president and sister Priyanka Gandi Vadra regarding the situation and also handed over a letter to him on June 9.
