Eknath Shinde, the Shiv Sena renegade, will succeed Uddhav Thackeray as chief minister of Maharashtra, the BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis announced on Thursday. The massive thunderbolt sealed a Sena revolt that deposed Uddhav Thackeray yesterday.

Having said that, Eknath Shinde took oath as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, alongside Devendra Fadnavis who sworn in as the Deputy CM.

The BJP leader declared that no additional ministers will take their oaths today.

Who is Eknath Shinde?

Shiv Sena member Eknath Sambhaji Shinde is one of the 288 members of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and a cabinet minister for public works (PWD) for the Maharashtra State Government. He represents the Kopri-Pachpakhadi (Vidhan Sabha seat) in Maharashtra.

He was re-elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly for a total of four terms in 2004, 2009, 2014, and 2019.

Early years

Shinde was born in Satara on February 9th, 1964. He moved to Thane at a young age, where he attended Mangala High School and Junior College until the 11th standard. He had to stop studying and start working to provide for his family.

He joined the party in 1980 under the influence of Shiv Sena leader Balasaheb Thackeray and began working as a Sainik. He took involved in a number of agitations during that period, including the Maharashtra-Karnataka Agitation on the status of the Belgauvi, for which he was detained for 40 days.

After entering politics, Shinde (58), once an auto-rickshaw driver in Thane, a city next to Mumbai, soon rose to become a crucial Sena leader in the Thane-Palghar region and is renowned for his combative stance on matters of public importance.

Political Background

Because of his commitment to the Sena’s cause, he was granted the chance to run for Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) corporator in 1997 and won with a sizable majority.

He was chosen to lead the house in the TMC in 2001. He held onto the position until 2004. He took an active interest in the overall growth and well-being of the entire Thane area as the head of the house in the TMC, rather than limiting himself to concerns specific to the TMC or the city.

Balasaheb Thackeray gave Shinde the chance to run in the Thane Assembly Constituency Assembly Elections in 2004, and Shinde won with a big majority.

He was selected to the coveted position of Shiv Sena Thane District Head the very next year, in 2005.

In the ensuing assembly elections in 2009, 2014, and 2019, he won.

He was chosen to lead the Shiv Sena legislative party during the 2014 elections, and he later became the Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly.

He took office as the minister of Public Works Department (Public Undertakings) within a month of Shiv Sena’s decision to join the state government, and in January 2019 he was given the additional duty of the Health and Family Welfare Ministry.

Family

Lata Shinde is wed to Eknath Shinde.

Anand Paranjape, a Shiv Sena defector running for the NCP, and Raju Patil, a candidate for the MNS, were defeated by his son, Dr. Shrikant Shinde, an orthopaedic physician, in the election for the Lok Sabha.
