Search engine giant Google is today celebrating the 308th birthday of British lexicographer Samuel Johnson. A lexicographer is a person who compiles dictionary and Dr Johnson is a prominent English lexicographer whose contribution to English literature has been immense.

Samuel Johnson published ‘Johnson’s: A Dictionary of the English Language’ in 1755 after 9 years of work. Dr. Johnson’s dictionary was the premier English dictionary until the publication of the Oxford English Dictionary after 150 years.

Johnson was also a poet, essayist, critic, biographer and editor. Dr. Johnson’s dictionary was more than just a word list, his work provided a vast understanding of 18th century English language and culture.
