India has had many iconic and powerful women who have led from the front — queens, warriors and leaders – that have been portrayed on the big silver screen.
‘Jhansi Ki Rani’ portrayed by Mehtab was released in 1953. Rani Laxmi Bai became a symbol of resistance to the British Raj, leading figures to the Indian Rebellion of 1857.
‘Razia Sultan’ portrayed by Hema Malini was released in 1983. Razia Sultan the only female ruler of the Delhi Sultanate who ruled from November 1236 to October 1240.
‘Jodha Akbar’ the magnum opus directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar in 2008. Jodhaa a Rajput princess was obliged to marry Mughal Emperor Akbar for political reasons, played by Aishwarya Rai Bachahan, won accolades for acting and costumes.
2015 saw Deepika Padukone portray ‘Mastani’ in ‘Bajirao Mastani’. The brave and beautiful Mastani, skilled in arts and warfare was the second wife to Maratha Peshwa Bajirao.
