Rahul replaces Shikhar Dhawan as India captain for ZIM ODI series

KL Rahul, India’s opening batter, has recovered from Covid and will lead Team India in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe, which begins on Thursday at the Harare Sports Club. Rahul will take over for Shikhar Dhawan, who was elected series captain.’

BCCI’s official statement read” The BCCI Medical Team has assessed KL Rahul and cleared him to play in the upcoming three-match ODI series in Zimbabwe. The All-India Senior Selection Committee has appointed him the captain of the side and named Shikhar Dhawan as his deputy.”

Rahul was scheduled to captain India in the home T20Is against South Africa following the completion of the IPL 2022, however, he was unable to do so due to a groin injury. The 30-year-time old’s on the sidelines was prolonged after it was found that he would undergo surgery. As a result, Rahul was unable to participate in the tour of England and Ireland.

The opener was scheduled to return during the recently finished West Indies and the United States tour, but after a positive Covid-19 test, the BCCI medical experts advised him to rest. He has already been named to India’s team for the Asia Cup, which takes place at the end of this month. Senior players including Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah were left out of the squad.
