NEW DELHI: Somnath Bharti of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) who is wanted in charges of attempt to murder case filed by his wife was ordered to surrender by 6PM today. The stern message from the court said, “If you are a responsible citizen, then don’t run away.”
Rejecting his anticipatory bail plea and refusing to protect him from the attest, the apex court then added, “Surrender first and then come to court.”
Earlier, party chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had urged Bharti to come in front and stop embarrassing his family members and party.
The warning tweets from Kejriwal hinted out that he had all but discarded the once powerful minister and his close aide. It is to be noted that the Delhi chief Minister had once openly defended Bharti in spite of a controversial midnight raid targeting Africal women in the national capital.
Bharti’s wife Lipika Mitra had accused him of domestic violence and torture. The two got married in 2010, while Mitra had also accused her lawmaker husband of trying to kill her and ordered his dog to bite her when she was pregnant.
41-year-old Somnath Bharti has been dodging the police following the rejection of his anticipatory plea from two courts last week.
Like a ‘common criminal’, Somnath Bharti has been changing locations and phones and getting professional help from a group of people with a crime record, the police said, adding that the AAP leader has also changed his appearance in order to escape detection.
Lawyer and former Delhi Law Minister Somnath Bharti has been reported to be tracked down to places in Haryana and Agra in Uttar Pradesh.
