KOLKATA: A major fire broke out on Friday at the Kolkata New Secretariat building in West Bengal, reports said.

It is not clear yet if there are people trapped inside. At least 20 fire engines have been rushed to the spot.

The cause of fire is still to be ascertained. The fire started around 10:30 am on the seventh floor of the building and thick smoke was seen billowing out of the windows of the building.

According to the Fire department officials, “Fire fighters, armed with masks and oxygen cylinders, are trying to enter the core area of the fire. One sky ladder has been brought to evacuate people, if any, adding, we believe that there is no person trapped.”

The Police Commissioner, Surajit Kar PuraKayastha, reached the spot to take the view of the incident.
