MUMBAI: Aruna Shanbaug, former King Edward Memorial Hospital nurse in Mumbai, who had been in coma for 42 years after she was raped by a hospital sweeper in 1973, died on Monday.
68-year-old Aruna was in critical condition and on ventilator support after suffering from pneumonia last week and she was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit after she suffered difficulties in breathing,” said a doctor of KEM Hospital in Mumbai. On November 27, 1973, Aruna, who was working as a junior nurse KEM hospital, was brutally assaulted and raped by a hospital sweeper Sohanlal Bharta Valmiki who also choked her with a dog chain.
In March 2011, the Supreme Court had rejected the petition filed by the author Pinki Virani who has written a book on Shanbaug titled ‘Aruna’s Story’, seeking mercy killing for Shanbaug. The hospital and nursing staff had also opposed the petition.For all the latest Regional News, download NewsX App
