GUWAHATI:  In a shocking episode of inhumanity and superstitious lifestyle in a village in Assam, a 63-year-old woman was stripped naked and beheaded by a mob of at least 200 people after being tagged as a ‘witch’.

The incident took place in Bhimajuli village of Assam’s Sonitpur district on Monday.

After being branded as a ‘witch’, the woman was dragged out of her home and taken to a nearby stream where she was stripped and attacked, the police informed who have arrested seven people in the case so far. 

Poni Orang’s village is mostly occupied by the Karbi tribe, and also has a considerable Santhal population.

“35-year-old Anima Ronghanti who claims to be a goddess had ordered people to gather at a local temple,” said Additional Superintendent of Police Samad Hussain adding that she told them that that Orang, an adivasi woman and a mother of five, was a witch, and would bring bad luck to the village.

“The mob after listening to the Anima philosophy rushed to Orang’s house and dragged her out. They then took her to a nearby stream and almost stripped her naked and beheaded her in broad daylight,” he said. 

Ronghanti, her husband, her elder sister and four others have been arrested by the police in connection with the case.

The incident comes to light even as the Assam government considers an anti-witchunt law in the state.

More than 100 women have been killed in a similar witch hunts in the state in last five years and this was the fifth such case of witch-hunt in the area, labeled Biswanath Chariali, over the last 10 years.
