In a bizarre incident, a woman was lynched to death by a mob in Jharkhand for her alleged involvement in chopping off a local girl’s hair. The incident was reported from Sahibganj district.

According to police, the woman was a part of a group of four, who were seeking alms in Mirpur village at around 10.30 am when they were suddenly attacked by an angry mob.

A week ago, a local girl’s braid had been chopped off and the villagers were looking for the culprits. They saw these four people and started pelting stones at them, accusing them of witch-hunting.

The woman who was in her 40s succumbed to her injuries and other three were seriously injured.

It is suspected that superstition was the cause of the attack.

“When police tried to reach the spot, they came under heavy stone-pelting. At least six policemen were injured and some police vehicles damaged. We had to open fire in the air to disperse the mob and rescue the four. They were rushed to hospital, where the woman succumbed to her injuries. The condition of the other three is said to be out of danger,” Shailesh Chaurasia, Deputy Commissioner, Sahibganj, told Indian Express.

Earlier this month, a woman was lynched in Uttar Pradesh’ Agra after villagers thought that she was the one responsible for chopping off the braids of sleeping women.

This comes after dozens of cases were reported from different districts by the women, alleging that their hair was mysteriously chopped off.

The panic has struck people in the rural areas, so much that the Uttar Pradesh police had to intervene and appeal to people to not to believe in rumours, the police have assured that the cases are being investigated and proper measures will be taken to stop such incidents.
