NEW DELHI: The insensitive attitude of Indian politicians towards women through objectionable comments has often stirred controversies.
The list of prominent leaders who have contributed in such issues include Samajwadi Party Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Babulal Gaur and many others. The latest to join the league is Aam Aadmi Party leader Somnath Bharti who said, “I am fully confident that if Delhi government is given full freedom (over security), beautiful women will be able to go out even after midnight without any fear. We will provide a fully-secure Delhi.”
The declaration from the former law minister came during a discussion on setting up of ‘Commission of Inquiry’ in the Delhi assembly.
According to the reports, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal who was also present at the time of the discussion did not react to Bharti’s comments.
Bharti after attracting criticism from all corners especially opposition parties including BJP and Congress defended his comment via a Facebook post saying, “I request media friends not to twist my statement: I have said, “Beautiful women, laden with jewelries, can travel at midnight fearlessly is the kind of benchmark one can measure security level at Delhi against, if AAP has police control. (sic)”
Well, we wonder what Somnath Bharti meant when he talked about ‘Beautiful women’. Women who are not laden with jewellery are not beautiful or only beautiful women seek security at night? Explaining the midnight cut-off has now become must for Bharti.
With such remarks delivered by our ‘leaders’, it becomes all the more clear that where the political system of our country stands today.
