Kerala Rain: The southern districts of Kerala experienced some relief from days of incessant rains while India Meteorological Department has issued an Orange alert for the day for eight districts in the northern part of Kerala. For the Keralan districts of Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod, the IMD has issued an Orange alert suggesting isolated heavy rainfall.
An orange alert indicates very heavy rains of 6 cm to 20 cm whereas a red alert indicates heavy to extremely heavy rains of over 20 cm in 24 hours. A yellow alert shows an indication of heavy rainfall between 6 and 11 cm.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan warned residents along its banks and those in low-lying areas of Thrissur and Ernakulam districts to be cautious and to be ready to evacuate as per instructions of the authorities.
According to Thrissur district officials, the Chalakkudi river level is rising as a result of water being released from the Peringalkuthu dam, and residents have been sent to relief camps.
In several areas of the state, the intense rains also led to landslides, which had an impact on road traffic. According to the statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), six major dams which include Ponmudi, Lower Periyar, Kallarkutty, Erattayar, and Kundala in Idukki and Moozhiyar in Pathanamthitta districts have reached red alert water storage levels.
